The boat used by Donald Campbell in his fatal attempt to set a world speed record will be allowed to breach the 10mph speed limit on the lake where he died.
The jet-powered Bluebird K7 vessel was recovered in 2001 from Coniston Water in Cumbria, where Campbell was killed, and is currently being restored.
Today the Lake District National Park Authority agreed to let Bluebird reach 100mph in a one-off seaworthiness trial. The recommendation will now go before the Government for approval.
The lake byelaws do not usually permit any speed in excess of 10mph, except in a legitimate bid for a national or world speed record.
The craft is being restored to full working order by a team of volunteers.
Campbell was killed instantly in January 1967 when Bluebird flipped over at a speed of more than 300mph.
