It comes as no great surprise or shock in this economic climate that another formula one team has decided to leave the championship. BMW announced that they would pull out at the end of 2009. This is a shame for the sport as it’s’ numbers dwindle and more third rate teams are drafted in to replace big names. It is especially a shame for Robert Kubica who is one of the best drivers in the field but has never really had a competitive car with the exception of mid season last year where he capitalised on it and won in Canada after Lewis Hamilton took himself and Kimi Raikkonen out of the equation.
The workforce at the teams HQ don’t know what will happen to them, no doubt there will be large numbers of redundancies and the rest will get folded back into the main motorsport development for GT cars etc. As for Robert Kubica he will now be looking for a drive as Nick Heidfeld will probably retire after an uneventful career. Where Kubica will go is anyone’s guess – will he be willing to go to one of the lower new teams? I doubt it. Will he go to somewhere like Renault or Red Bull? Probably. I wish him all the best, he’s a top driver and we need people like him racing in top cars. Thre is hope for him yet however, don’t forget Jenson Button was in a similar situation last year and look how he did.
